Managed by Harry S. Gump, followed by Don and Dotty Gump, Smiling Scot opened in 1932 and was established as a whManaged by Harry S. Gump, followed by Don and Dotty Gump, Smiling Scot opened in 1932 selling household cleaning products under the name. Later, it operated as a wholesale outlet located on land in the Northwest Boulevard Co. subdivision in Columbus, Ohio. The building still stands at 1266 Goodale Boulevard and became occupied by Metro Industries in 1966.

The award-winning company was said to be the largest of its time in 1957. In 1964, they became the exclusive distributor of the Central Ohio Arrow Guide by the R. L. Polk Co. that showed all the streets of the city and suburbs and the numbers where they intersected.
